Additional Southeastern Connecticut Market Activity
Mohegan Sun Hotel & Casino, Montville CT: Located minutes from Foxwoods in nearby Montville CT, the Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort, owned by the Mohegan Indian Tribe, announced plans for a $740 million expansion that will add 1,500 jobs. Mohegan Sun, the Northeast’s premier entertainment destination in southeastern Connecticut, announced plans for an estimated $740 million expansion. The cornerstone of Project Horizon will be a new 1,000-room hotel, expected to feature a unique House of Blues experience including 300 House of Blues-themed hotel rooms, which will be owned and operated by Mohegan Sun, and an exclusive, members-only House of Blues Foundation Room™ to be located on the upper floors of the new hotel. House of Blues is a Live Nation Brand. Other highlights of the new House of Blues experience at Mohegan Sun would include a House of Blues Music Hall, restaurant, retail outlet, and poker room. Project Horizon also calls for 115,000 square feet of additional retail and restaurant space and the new 64,000-square-foot “Casino of the Wind.” In addition, Mohegan Sun will expand its Asian gaming in the Casino of the Earth.
The Mohegans are embarking on their latest project even as the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation continues work on a $700 million project to expand its Foxwoods Resort Casino gaming empire. The Mashantuckets have partnered with Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage to build an adjacent hotel, casino and convention center that will be called MGM Grand at Foxwoods when it's completed in 2008.
Both casinos insist there is still room to grow in a gaming market that's valued at $4 billion or more annually. The two Connecticut casinos took in a staggering $3.15 billion in 2006, including $1.58 billion at Foxwoods and $1.57 billion at Mohegan Sun. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun combined are estimated to add more than 3,000 new jobs by the end of the decade.
